Picking Your Domain.

Do’s and Don’ts

Choosing the right domain is a difficult, but important task. There are several reasons why you should really take some time to sit down and think about it before ordering a domain.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

Of course we want a good ranking in Google, but so do all of your competitors. Google has a lot of factors they look at when it comes to ranking you within their search results, one of them is your domain.

Here are a few important factors which are in play here:
– The extension;
– The length of the domain;
– The Keywords.

The Extension

With a domain extension we mean ‘.com’ for example or ‘.org’ etc. Each extension has different values when it comes to the ranking.
The best extension by far is the ‘.com’. Finding a domain which has the ‘.com’ extension available will significantly improve your SEO.
On top of that, if the ‘.com’ and maybe some other extensions have already been taken, it may get confusion for potential visitors and they might accidentally go to the wrong website thinking they go to yours.

So make sure to do your research and pick the right extension, not just for the SEO, but also to make sure potential visitors end up on your website and not on the website of someone else (or worse, a competitor).

Now obviously if you offer a specific product in just your country – say The Netherlands – you can definitely go for the ‘.nl’ extension as well as Dutch search queries will favor the .nl extension as well.

The Length of the Domain

It may not seem very important, but we want to stay under 16 characters when it comes to the length of the domain. And if possible shorter. In general we can say the shorter the better, however the keywords (next paragraph) are also important.

Keywords

Keywords are important in your entire site, but definitely also in your domain! Based on the search volume of these words (how many people search on these words every month) we can find out how good certain keywords are.

Having 1 or 2 keywords in your domain which are describing what you do will be boosting your ranking. On top of that, it also creates trust. I would rather go to a website where the domain says something about what they do then some random website which seems to be much more general.

MakeYourWpSite.com for example has keywords about making websites and WordPress (WordPress in the domain is something WP itself does not want you to do). It is below 15 characters, has keywords and has the .com extension.
